CHELTENHAM EXPERIENCE
HOPEFULLY FIRST OF MANY

BY RALPH MELLON
Selkirk’s famous father and son horse racing double act is reflecting on a memorable introduction to the ‘Olympics’ of National Hunt racing.
Stuart and Sam Coltherd made their first visit this week to the Cheltenham Festival, one of the biggest and best-known racing spectaculars in the world, where they had the honour of taking part on the opening day. Sam rode Captain Redbeard on Tuesday, in the final race of the day, the 5.30pm Close Brothers Novice Handicap, over two miles 4.5 furlongs.
Although the actual race didn’t go quite so well for the family of trainer, jockey and horse, they are taking many positives from it, regarding it as a learning curve and a very enriching experience.

VICTORY IN FINAL RACE CROWNS SUCCESSFUL DAY AT HEXHAM

BY JOHN SMAIL
JUST two days after returning from his first Cheltenham Race Festival outing, local trainer Stuart Coltherd got back to business by saddling four runners at Thursday’s Hexham meeting.
With son Sam riding all four of the Clarilawmoor yard’s entries, it proved a highly successful day for the Selkirk trainer.
After notching two second places with Hurricane Rita and Tankurk Bank, plus a third spot for Darsi Dancer, the final race of the day saw Achill Road Boy grab a thrilling four-length victory.
Trailing six lengths behind favourite Knocknamona in the home straight, jockey Sam Coltherd showed grit and determination to push the eight-year-old gelding past his tiring rival for a stunning win – Achill Road Boy’s second since arriving at the Coltherd yard in August.
